Lot 104
1800 C-1 R2. ANACS graded VF-35. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and display only a few trivial contact marks. A dull diagonal nick over the top of the wreath is a good identifying mark. This piece is covered with a very thin layer of dirt that dulls the natural gloss. A bath may be indicated here to maximize the eye appeal. LDS, Manley state 5.0. The thick die break from the E in UNITED to the wreath is continuous. Our grade is VF25.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1800 C-1 R2 F15. Double Struck against Off-Center Blank Planchet. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with smooth, attractive surfaces. No roughness or verdigris, only trivial contact marks including a very light rim bruise at the B in LIBERTY and a couple dull nicks high on the neck. Double struck. The first strike was normal and properly centered on the planchet, but the coin failed to eject from the press before another planchet was partially inserted into the chamber and another strike occurred. The obverse die struck the obverse a second time while the reverse die struck the new blank planchet and pressed it into the reverse of this piece about 40% off center leaving a strong indent. There was a slight rotation between strikes on the obverse leaving clear doubling on the lower part of the portrait and creating a date that reads "1188000." Weight 85.0 grains. A dramatic mint error and it comes with an important provenance.
Estimated Value $750-UP.

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 F12. Slightly sharper but extremely faint roughness covers much of the obverse, strongest in the field behind the portrait. In addition there are a few tiny pits under the hair ribbon and a couple more in the field off the chin. The only notable marks are a very light rim bruise over the T in LIBERTY and a dull rim nick left of the L. Glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. The date and legends are strong and the overdate is obvious to the unaided eye. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, with significant die rust (tiny lumps on the coin) showing on both sides. The microscopic environmental roughness on the obverse is mostly lost in the die rust, and this piece offers nice eye appeal. A popular overdate variety that is seldom seen in grades better than VG.
Estimated Value $2,500-UP.

1803 C-1 R1 PCGS graded AU55. PCGS graded AU-55. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with lustrous golden steel brown toning covering the protected areas. Great eye appeal with just a touch of rub on the highest points of the devices. None of these marks is distracting. LDS, Manley state 3.0. All the die cracks described by Manley are clearly visible on the reverse and there is a small but clearly defined rim cud over the M in AMERICA that is not mentioned in the Manley reference. 1804 C-2 R6 AG3. Off-Center Tab Strike. Slightly sharper, especially on the reverse, but there is an area of roughness left of the hair ribbon. No verdigris and only minor contact marks, including several tiny pinpricks in the field above the bust. Recolored a mostly glossy chocolate brown with bluish steel overtones. The date is weak but easily readable and the legends are complete except for the I in UNITED, which is gone (the left edge of the reverse is always weakly struck on this variety). This piece appears to have been struck normally and then struck a second time way off center creating a tab on the rim left of the lower curls. The die struck the obverse rim while the opposing reverse rim was pressed into a new planchet. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late. There is a die crack through the top of IBERTY to the rim over the Y, and the area over TY is just starting to sink. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CW, which is typical for the variety. About 25 examples are known of this very rare variety, and most of those are in low grade.

Smooth and attractive showing only minor contact marks, including a tiny rim nick over the A in STATES. Double struck. The first strike was an obverse brockage that was centered on the planchet. The second strike was centered on the planchet as well, but it was rotated about 5 degrees CCW relative to the first impression on the obverse. The doubling is clearly visible on the date and most of the portrait. In addition there is clear obverse brockage undertype showing on the reverse including an incuse 04 from the date at S-O and parts of LIBERTY at the fraction and ICA. This is a neat mint error. In addition an impression of a new blank planchet positioned off center arcs through the O in OF into the wreath. The most interesting strike was a tab impression about 90% off center to K-9 leaving LIB clearly visible behind the portrait and the U from UNITED showing over TE in the "normal" UNITED. Close to VF35 but there are two parallel nicks on the bust just below the neck and a pair of shallow planchet flakes in the field off the upper end of the hair ribbon. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with dentils all the way around the obverse and sharp repunching visible on the 7. This piece was double struck. The first strike was slightly off center. The planchet was then flipped over and restruck properly. The neck of Ms Liberty is clearly visible on the wreath bow and the lower part of all 4 digits of the date show on the rim at UNI. A curved depression inside the top of the wreath is from the back of the head leading into the hair ribbon. While there are obvious remnants of the off-center obverse showing on the reverse, there is no trace of an undertype on the obverse. A neat mint error that offers excellent eye appeal.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1807 C-1 R1 VF25. Nice glossy chocolate brown and steel. No roughness or verdigris, only minor contact marks. The best identifying mark is a faint hairline scratch from the bottom of the eye to the ear. Rare EDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching on the 7 is sharp and most of the dentils are clear. The strike on EN in CENT and the ribbon loop below is soft, which is typical of the early state, but everything else is sharp.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1808/7 C-1 R7 Overdate 8 over 7 AG3. Sharpness VG7 but there are numerous tiny pits mixed with fine granularity on both sides. A small area of shallow corrosion in the field before the neck and a smaller spot of corrosion at AL in HALF are the most-obvious marks. No verdigris or contact marks. Slightly glossy medium chocolate and darker steel. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are complete except for weakness at OF AMERICA and the fraction thanks to an uneven strike on that side, as usual due to non-parallel die faces. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The die crack through the top of STAT to the dentils left the S is light but visible and the crack through the top of TED to t+X78he dentils is faint. To the best of our knowledge this is the only example known of the early state and an uncracked example is unknown. It is speculated that the non-parallel die faces and the uneven strike pressures that resulted from them are responsible for the early if not immediate cracking of the reverse die. This is the Manley plate coin for the variety (the large photos) and of the early die state (his state 1.0). Less than 10 examples are known and only 1 of those grades better than VG. A great rarity and a major key to completing a half cent collection by Cohen variety numbers, regardless of the die state.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
